Geraint Thomas, Tour de France legend, bids emotional farewell in final race

On Sunday, on more familiar terrain, he contested his final race, the Tour of Britain, which concluded in Cardiff. The 122.2km (76 miles) final stage began at the Newport velodrome that carries the 39-year-old’s name, where crowds gathered to cheer him on; it then traced a route past his childhood club, Maindy Flyers, before finishing in his hometown. Former Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas bade an emotional farewell to cycling, marking the occasion with a final ride through his home city. The former Whitchurch High School pupil won the Tour de France in 2018, adding that triumph to Olympic gold medals at Beijing 2008 and London 2012.
